Band 8 IELTS essay sample

In the modern world, everyone is in a race to earn more and have a luxury lifestyle. It is now common to find couples having children at a later / advanced age. This is due to the fact that they want to achieve their goals first. While there are several merits to this trend, demerits clearly outweigh the advantages.

People have their own reasons to have babies in the thirties or forties. The most important among them is the desire to achieve financial independence before they become parents. Parenthood brings with it a lot of responsibilities. Since young couples are unlikely to earn much, many of them are not financially ready to welcome a baby. Hence, they choose to have children at an advanced age.

However, this development has a lot of demerits. The prominent one is that it causes a plethora of health problems, if they prefer to have children at an older age. This is due to the fact that fertility decreases in both men and women as they age. Thus, these reasons sometimes lead to problems between couples, and sometimes it could even result in divorce. For example, many couples who decide to start family at a later age eventually opt for adoption because of their ability to conceive. Also, babies conceived at an advanced age are more likely to suffer from genetic problems like Downs Syndrome. Hence, it is proved that having children at an older age may be deleterious for both the parents and the child. That is why I consider that this trend has more demerits than advantages.

To conclude, although there are a few merits to having babies at an advanced age, in my opinion, this is a negative development because of the increased risk of infertility and health problems in both the mother and the baby.
