Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Many people insist that it is better to take a virtual tour of various places using the internet than visiting them in person because the former method is more affordable. However, I firmly believe that people should tour the places physically since that provides an overall better experience and helps them to feel the essence of the culture linked to that region. In this essay, I will discuss both the views and defend my opinion / substantiate my view.

On the one hand, there are several advantages to visiting places using the internet. Most online platforms such as Youtube or Netflix have rich videos that demonstrate the landscapes, monuments and various pristine locations of other countries. It is quite convenient and time-saving to see these spots, lying on the couch of one’s home. A person is freed from the tedious task of travelling, staying in different places and interacting with the inhabitants there. Furthermore, internet and streaming websites are economical these days and so virtual tours do not burn a hole in one’s pocket.

On the other hand, physically visiting a place and enjoying its beauty is an altogether different experience / is a more fulfilling experience. Firstly, visiting a foreign spot gives an overall better experience to the visitor. For example, anyone can see the Burj Khalifa, the tallest building in the world, on a computer screen; but physically going there and enjoying the aerial view of Dubai city at night from its top floor is an altogether different experience. Secondly, it helps individuals to learn about the cultural heritage of that place. Staying in a different region, trying its local cuisines, talking to the natives, and participating in a local festival will help them to understand more about that area’s history. For example, a foreigner attending the Diwali festival in India gets an idea of how people celebrate it by lighting lamps and socializing.

In conclusion, it is handy and cost-effective to tour places using websites or mobile applications. However, exploring the places in person will help a traveler to better enjoy them in an enhanced environment and enable him to comprehend and appreciate the traditions of that society.
