The internet has changed the way we learn. Nowadays, we can learn anything and everything from the comfort of our home using a computer or smartphone. The main advantage of this development is that it allows students to learn at a time and place convenient to them; however, many students find online classes less helpful than regular classes.
Online education is a boon for students who cannot attend a regular class due to various reasons. It is particularly suitable for the current times when schools and colleges all over the world are shut due to the Corona Pandemic. However, thanks to internet technologies, academic institutions are still able to deliver lessons to their students. The main advantage of online learning is that it allows students to study at their own pace. If there is a lesson that they find difficult, they can revise it as many times as they want by repeatedly watching the video. This is not exactly possible in the case of regular classroom learning. Affordability is another advantage of online education. Online courses are way cheaper than regular courses.
However, online education has some downsides as well. It is not exactly suitable for students who need someone to constantly monitor their progress. When it comes to online learning, a student’s success depends entirely on their motivation to learn. Another downside of online learning is that it is not easy for students to compare their performance with that of their peers. This can also affect the grades of some students. In a traditional classroom, there is a healthy competition between students to get higher marks. This component is missing in online classrooms. Consequently, many parents and students still prefer regular courses to online courses. Employers also tend to prefer candidates who earned their degrees via the traditional classroom setup.
In conclusion, online education allows students to study from anywhere and at any time. However, it is not suitable for very young students or those who lack self-discipline. In a traditional classroom, there are teachers to constantly assess a student’s progress and motivate them to study hard. In online education, a student’s success depends entirely on their level of motivation to study.
