In recent years, the trend of being self-employed is getting popular among working professionals and they tend to avoid being employed by other companies. People have started showing interests in this alternative employment option mainly because of the faults in the conventional human resource management system. In this essay, I will discuss the reasons for this preference and the disadvantages of being one’s own boss.

There are many arguments people put forward for choosing the self-employment as a better option. The primary reason for this is that the current generation likes to have a balanced approach towards work and life. Since some organizations require the employees to work overtime and handle many tasks within a stipulated time period, people tend to suffer from mental and physical illnesses. For instance, a medical study conducted among IT professionals proclaimed that many of them are undergoing mental trauma due to their daily office routine. In addition, many companies dissapoint their workers by not satisfying their modern expectations. To elaborate, youngsters nowadays demand a deserving salary, periodical promotion and other benefits such as flexible work hours, indoor sports center and cafeteria but many employers fail to provide these contemporary needs of them. Woking women, for example, give up their jobs and become work-at-home freelancers as the employers do not provide them with the facilities for nursing their babies at office.

Though there are valid reasons for being self-employed, it also has certain drawbacks. Firstly, these business activities could not guarantee a fixed income because they depends on various factors such as country’s financial health and competition with their counterparts. Moreover, profits will vary monthly, for instance, a finance and accounting solopreneur will be able to rear a high profit only at the end of a financial year. Secondly, they might miss socializing with their colleagues and learning team work. As a result, they might lack skills such as networking and team management.

In conclusion, the major demerits in the corporates which drive people towards entrepreneurship are the lack of work-life balance and sophisticated work atmosphere. However, when deciding to quit a nine-to-five job, one should be ready to encounter the challenges in entrepreneurship to sustain in the field.
