Band 8 IELTS essay sample
The question of how beneficial living abroad can be for a child often arises. Many argue that it will give children valuable experiences they would otherwise not have, whereas others feel it is disruptive to their studies and character formation. I believe that living abroad is a positive experience for a child.
It is easy to understand why many see moving to another country as a disruptive influence on a child. There is no doubt that moving to another country is a big challenge and one which poses many academic hurdles for a child. If the child does not have a good understanding of the language of the country they move to, studying and socialising will be very difficult in the beginning and many will fall behind their peers in grades and social skills. This will obviously be frustrating for the child and may cause them to withdraw or lose motivation to learn and it will have a negative / disastrous effect on their academic future.
On the other hand, there are many positives to be gained from living in another country. Children have remarkable language skills and, in such an immersive environment, they will quickly pick up the local language and gain deeper understanding of it than if they were studying in their own country. This level of native fluency will be a valuable asset for them in the future even if it takes a few months to acquire it in the beginning. Furthermore, living in a foreign country will teach children to be inclusive and have respect for different cultures, and thus help them cultivate the important quality of empathy. This enables them to cooperate with their colleagues better by tolerating their difference, and achieve better work performance. These qualities are particularly important especially when we consider that we are in an increasingly teamwork-oriented workplace.
In short, while it is true that it may be difficult to assimilate the local language and culture at first, children have a wonderful capacity for languages and any shortcomings they have will be quickly remedied. I feel that the benefits of language acquisition and exposure to different cultures far outweigh the disadvantages caused by the short disruption to their academic progress.
