Band 8 IELTS essay sample
In today’s world it is very common to see many families move to foreign nations for work. While many people believe that this negatively impacts children, others think that it does not do any harm to the child. In my opinion, children are usually affected by this move during the initial years; however, eventually, it will benefit them.
I believe that this trend has a negative effect on the child’s education and mental wellbeing and thus affect their overall development. To begin with, when parents move to foreign countries, most of the time they take their kids along with them. Different societies give a different experience to little ones. For example, when they go to school in a foreign land, they make new friends and get to experience a different culture. This makes them stronger emotionally and adds to their ability to make new friends. Another very important advantage is that they get to learn foreign languages. Being multilingual is quite an advantage in the modern world.
However, it has been observed many a time children are not able to cope up with the change in the curriculum. Moreover, if parents move in between a school term, their kids might have to take a gap year and thus it has a negative impact on their education. For example, recently one of my uncles moved to London just after his daughter’s school session started in India. In the initial days they struggled to get their child admitted in a school as mid-terms were going on in London. Finally, when she got admission after 6 months, she struggled with the studies over there, as it was much different from what she had been learning in India. Children will also miss their friends and grandparents when they move abroad. This can cause them considerable emotional distress.
In conclusion, I would say that moving to a foreign country gives a child exposure to different cultures and an opportunity to make new friends, but it negatively impacts their relationships back home and may cause considerable emotional distress during the initial years.
