Band 6.5 IELTS essay sample

n the last decades, people’s eating habits have changed and caused serious health issues, such as obesity. There are various of reasons behind it. This essay will discuss the main causes of this change and offer some solutions.

To begin with, living in the current competitive world forces people to dedicate most of their time to work and work-related matters such as scaling up their knowledge to cope with their rivals, for example, attending complimentary courses in soft skills or getting certified in relevant hard skills. This is an issue because people would not have sufficient time to prepare healthy food; therefore, they often consume fast food or pre-cooked meals. To solve this problem, governments must invest in awareness campaigns. To illustrate, the health authority can force producers of processed and unhealthy meals to attach stickers and images of damaged organs on their products, same as what is happening today for cigarettes. If this happens, more and more people will avoid regular consumption of foods that would cause them health issues.

Moreover, people are generally cautious about their expenses. Junk foods are way cheaper than healthy foods. For instance, a burger might cost half of the price of a salad bowl and more filling. Therefore, people tend to eat cheaper products that help them feel full for a longer time rather than spending a fortune on fruits and vegetables, which are not even a main dish. To solve this issue, governments must apply heavy taxes on unhealthy and sugary products. If consumers find the prices of processed foods higher or equivalent to the costs of the healthy products, more likely they will select the healthy option.

In conclusion, nowadays people are more likely to consume unhealthy food due to their lifestyle and living circumstances; therefore, they are facing a variety of problems and diseases, such as obesity or internal organs malfunctioning; however, these problems are not insurmountable. It is governments’ responsibility to tackle these issues, and they should begin by considering some of the solutions proposed above.
