Communication mediums such as TV and newspapers often use pictorial representations in addition to news articles. This is because visual media has a far more compelling impact than words. In my opinion, pictures or visuals act as evidence to add credibility to the story. This makes news far more convincing than mere words.

Many years ago, news was read on television by the anchors or newsreaders. As the years progress, the importance of live reporting has increased. Live reporting is now the key to convince the viewers. For instance, if a reader reads about the shortage of Covid 19 vaccine due to high demand, they may not fully grasp the gravity of the situation, but if they a see a long queue of people waiting for their turn to get the shot, they will get the message instantly. Likewise, no words can fully express the devastation caused by natural calamities. A single photo, on the other hand, can easily achieve this.

Moreover, the visual impact is crucial while representing and understanding complicated data. Data driven news can be very complicated and difficult to comprehend. Pictorial representations make news easily understandable. For instance, during the surge in COVID cases, news channels gave pictorial representations of the number of Covid cases, those who recovered and those who died. In the same way, pictures often encourage people to read a news story they would have otherwise ignored.

To sum up, pictures lend credibility to news stories and encourage people to read them. Thus pictures make the consumption of news easier. No wonder a picture is worth 1000 words.
