Band 8 IELTS essay sample

A growing number of animal species living in the wild are either on the brink of extinction or categorized as vulnerable species. There are several reasons for this loss of biodiversity including deforestation and hunting. However, some effective measures can be taken by the government and the people to address this issue and they will be discussed in this essay.

To commence with, one of the preponderant reasons for the loss/extinction of wildlife is deforestation.  The forests are natural habitats of wild animals, and the cutting of trees owing to burgeoning population and urbanization has made these animals homeless. As a result, animals such as cheetahs, rhinos and orangutans are in danger because they have lost their shelter and protection. Furthermore, hunting and poaching of these animals provide commercial benefits to humans. Consequently, some species like African black rhinoceros have vanished and others like giant panda are on the brink / verge of extinction.

Nevertheless, some actions can be taken by the government to combat this problem. Firstly, the government should impose stringent laws and take punitive actions against illegal hunting and poaching. Secondly, restoration of habitats can be achieved by constructing wildlife sanctuaries. In addition to this, captive breeding can be promoted in such areas. Moreover, awareness campaigns should be run by the government to acquaint people with the significance of biodiversity and its role in preserving our ecosystem.

To conclude, some wild species are facing existential threat and others are at the edge of extinction due to deforestation and hunting. Therefore, concerted efforts of the government and individuals are required for the conservation of animal diversity and maintaining ecological balance.
