Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

Some faraway places such as Sahara desert or the Antarctic have grown in popularity among tourists over the last decade. There are both advantages and disadvantages to both the tourists and the places hosting them. In this essay, I will elaborate on my view. It is undeniable that having more tourists enables these places to earn more revenue.

It gives rise to the tourism industry and thus generates revenue for the local government. With more revenue, the government can enhance the living standard of the local people by spending money on infrastructure such as roads. As for the tourists, they can broaden their horizon by visiting the challenging places such as Sahara desert. Tourists rarely left footprints on those places about a decade ago, leaving them full of mysteries and secrets. Travelling to the faraway lands will open the eyes of people who dare to travel. The exposure to extreme weathers, epic views and the like provide a travel experience unlike any other the traveler has ever had.

However, if more tourists visit the previously unexplored places, it can cause serious pollution and damage to the natural habitat of many animals. Some tourists are unaware of the importance of protecting the environment. For instance, some tourists who travelled to Antarctic a few years ago left a huge amount of rubbish there, leading damages to the homes of hundreds of penguins. Furthermore, not everyone can afford to go to the Sahara desert or the Antarctic as they require certain level of physical and mental fitness. Tourists daring to visit / visiting those distant places should be ready to take physical and mental challenges. Otherwise they may suffer from dehydration as their bodies cannot tolerate the extremely boiling temperature of the Sahara desert or the freezing cold of Antarctica.

To conclude, there are both advantages and disadvantages to traveling to some places that people rarely visit due to the positive benefits to the economy and the individual. However, one cannot ignore the negative sides, as this can be detrimental to the environment and it is a physically and mentally challenging task for the individual.
