According to some people, due to the advent of new age communication technologies, it is no longer necessary to write letters. I do not agree with this view.
It is true that emails and instant messaging have changed the way we now communicate. The vast majority of us now do not write letters to friends or acquaintances. However, letters are still written for official communication. For example, I still write letters to my bank. Likewise, they send me letters regarding my account. So, letter writing is still relevant. Governments and other agencies often send us letters. That is why post offices still function. I do admit that the practice of writing letters to family or friends has died; however, official communication is still through letters to a great extent. This is probably because a letter with a signature is a tangible proof. Emails aren’t really considered a proof in courts of law because they can be forged easily.
Secondly, despite the mind-boggling enhancements in the communication area, octogenarian people still prefer the vintage ways. This is because they admire sending a hand-written letter to their beloved ones as it contains emotions. For instance, my grandmother used to write letters to me when I was living in a hostel. She is no more but I still keep those letters as a souvenir and a proof of her affection. Additionally, people who are not familiar with modern technologies like email may prefer to write letters.
In conclusion, the recent development in information technology has enabled people to communicate without writing letters. Despite this, the practice of writing letters is still relevant and carries irrefutable weight for a particular group. In my opinion, both means of communication should be used depending upon the need and the nature of the situation.
