Several students who are pursuing tertiary education take a part-time job. In my opinion, this is a positive development although it has a few minor downsides.

When students work part time, it eases the financial burden on their parents. When they get into university, they have to pay hefty fees. Securing part-time employment helps them earn an income so that they can pay their fees and meet other expenses such as food and accommodation. Consequently, parents are not put under financial pressure.

In addition to relieving financial stress on parents, they are more likely to find a job once they complete their university education. Companies take into account candidates’ prior experience while hiring them because experienced applicants acquire necessary skills over the course of their past employment. For instance, any jobs teach basic skills such as how to communicate effectively with colleagues and customers, how to meet a deadline and so on. Consequently, experience plays a vital role in getting a decent full-time job.

Conversely, they may fall behind in studies. After attending classes for approximately 7-8 hours at an educational institute, they have to work at least 4 hours at a workplace. Thus, the hectic schedule leaves no time left in a day to revise concepts which are covered by professors in the classroom. Consequently, they may fail to allocate / find time to study.  However, I believe that this is an opportunity to learn time management which can help them at later stages in life.

To conclude, although their schedule becomes hectic and may affect their studies, this can be considered as an opportunity to learn to utilise time wisely. I am of the opinion that this is a welcome change since it helps them secure a job immediately after studies and relieves financial stress on parents.
