University education is the stepping stone to a successful career. Many students stay with their parents, whereas others rent a separate house or share a hostel room with their friends to study at a university. This essay will discuss the merits and demerits of both scenarios.

The major advantage of staying with parents during college days is that one does not have to worry about expenditures. Many parents are rich enough to pay for their children’s college expenses and this helps the students who live with their families to concentrate on their studies. However, this makes children overly dependent on their parents and puts them in trouble when they have move to another city for work. For example, a survey conducted by Harvard University reveals that 76% of students who stayed in their hometown for higher studies struggle to prepare their own meal when they move to another city for work.

On the flip side, travelling to a different city for higher studies teaches the student valuable life lessons. When a student starts living alone, he learns self-discipline by doing day to day activities. For instance, washing clothes, cooking meals and doing all other daily chores enables him to be independent and this is the main advantage of staying away from parents. At the same time, it is difficult for the students to cope up with all these activities along with studies. Some students even work part time to manage their own expenses. These are the downside of staying alone during higher studies.

In conclusion, students benefit in different ways when they live with their family and when they stay alone. Similarly, there are disadvantages in both the cases.

As the universities are spread across different geographic locations, some students may stay with their families whereas others may end up staying away from their native place.
Each of these situations is associated with pros and cons which have a significant impact upon the personal and professional growth of the students.

The opportunity of staying with the family during university studies can be a blessing in many ways. Firstly, the support from the family provides an emotional satisfaction. Consequently, it helps in performing well in academics. Additionally, the student’s energy can be fully invested in studies as the responsibility of daily household chores lies with the family. However, the support from the family can be a deterrent in the personal growth of the student as it increases the dependency upon others. Also, the student might find it difficult to adapt to new challenges which crop up in future.

The situation which requires a student to stay away from family may initially sound too harsh but it helps in the personal growth of a student as a mature individual. Some of the drawbacks of living alone include lack of emotional support, home sickness and reduced focus on studies. Despite these problems the student who learns to live on their own evolve into independent and emotionally strong individuals. Hence they learn an important life skill which proves to be rewarding in their career.

In conclusion, I feel that staying with the family during studies may help in academic growth but hinders the personal growth. On the other hand, living alone may create difficulties in academic excellence but helps in growing up as a better individual.
