Band 8 IELTS essay sample
These days, students are trained / taught to push themselves harder and outshine their peers rather than work together for mutual benefits. Although this might affect their ability to cooperate, they will also gain valuable characteristics that will reward them later on in their lives. In my opinion, the advantages of being competitive outweigh the disadvantages.
The greatest benefit of studying in a competitive classroom is that students will face the real-world challenge of competition at an early stage. This is to say that the exposure to competition makes students easily adapt to the tough job market. For example, a survey conducted by Harvard University shows that 95% of graduates from competitive classrooms feel confident and give satisfied performances in their first jobs. Therefore, the main advantage of teaching students to work harder and be better than their peers is that it prepares them for the workplace.
Those who disagree with this insist that students will fail to learn how to work in a team. However, competitions between teams can be an effective method for students to cooperate and experience teamwork. For example, football and basketball are the most popular team sport games, which require every member to work together and beat the rival. Hence, students can still work cooperatively as a team in the classroom and compete against other teams.
The essay discussed the significance of competition in classroom and proved that it equips students with the confidence and ability to survive in the job market and also explained that teamwork can still be learnt through group competitions. In conclusion, the benefits of classroom competition outweigh its drawbacks.
