Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

Many small business entities are struggling to survive in the competition with supermarkets, which are expanding their domination in local communities. It is believed that the demise of local businesses can cause economic downturn in these areas. I partly agree with this idea.

There is a growing concern about the probability of supermarkets destroying local economies. Small local stores cannot offer cheaper prices than supermarkets. Big marts purchase products in bulk, which enables them to offer competitive prices. Small businesses run by just the owner or a few employees cannot offer the same prices or customer care and will eventually lose their market share. The impact the discontinuance of local businesses has on the local economies is so immense that it leads to a long-term economic recession in local communities.

Contrary to this concern, large businesses can benefit local communities in many ways. First, a host of local people can have more opportunities to participate in economic activities. One chain of supermarket needs a number of employees to operate stores in the chain and the number of stores in the chain exceeds the number of employees at local businesses. Additionally, they need more workers to be allocated for distribution and operation. Second, the conglomerate can contribute to the improvement of welfare in local areas. Most companies capitalize on investment in the local area as their marketing strategy and residents can gain benefits from it. This investment can be exhibitions, concerts or support for local sport team.

In conclusion, some people are apprehensive about the future of local economy due to the entry of supermarkets. I contend that despite the possibility of reduction in the number of small businesses, local communities can garner more benefits from big chains which offer employment opportunities and investment into welfare.

Education is considered vital for the future of any society in today’s world. Governments throughout the world should make compulsory education for all children between 5-15 years. To what extent do you agree or disagree.

In current era, education is an imperative factor for the development of any nations. Therefore, it is often argued that authorities of all the developing and development countries should make schooling mandatory for all the adolescents who are below 5-15 years. This essay agrees with this aforementioned statement and will further elaborate in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, education provides people knowledge and skills. People who are qualified are more likely to acquire a decent job. This is because schools aim to teach young minds moral values such as tolerance, discipline and sharing. As a result, students learn various skills and fundamental concepts of any information. For example, Canadian government is providing free education to all the primary and tertiary students as it is extremely important for enhancing individual’s ability. Furthermore, adolescency is an effective learning period to achieve a successful career.

Moreover, compulsory education not only increases pupil’s talent, but also contribute positively to society. In other words, higher qualified professionals can earn a higher salary and share certain proportion of their income in terms of tax amount, charity, funds, and so on. This approach builds national economy and offers educated profiles to community such as doctors, engineers, teachers, etc. For instance, according to a recent global survey conducted by Oxford University, it was found that the majority of the wealthy nations have made compulsory education to the children of 5-15 years for betterment of society.

In conclusion, providing mandatory education benefits an individual and community. Hence, nowadays more and more people are in encouragement with government to promote education for all the children and teenagers.

I have a query regarding this question.
“Some people think that the closure of local businesses will bring about the death of local communities.”
I think the question says closure of local businesses will destroy local communities, rather than supermarkets will slowdown the local economy.

I think we need to discuss If local businesses are destroyed how it will impact local communities. Will they migrate to cities or stay together?

    Am I thinking right?

Write about the impact of this phenomenon of local communities. Local businesses are closing because of a variety of reasons. Supermarkets are one of them. Online shopping is another reason. Discuss what impact this will have on local economies.
