Band 7 IELTS essay sample

Over the last few decades, working overtime has become the norm for the working population, and this has resulted in a drastic reduction in personal time. It definitely has more demerits than merits.

To begin with, in the corporate world, it is believed that working long hours will guarantee job security, promotions, and a higher salary. Unfortunately, this is true only in a few cases, whereas the majority of organizations strive for a healthy work environment. People who work beyond normal working hours have a disrupted work-life balance as they keep working from morning to night without any breaks. Consequently, it leads to detachment from the family members, leaving no time to be spent with the spouse, children, family, and friends. For instance, a manifold number of divorce cases have been filed in the Indian domestic courts in the past five years, stating the reason as lack of family time.

In addition, working extra shifts on a daily basis affects an individual’s health as well. It increases exhaustion and stress levels, which eventually leads to health disorders. There is hardly any time to pursue hobbies or interests, resulting in detrimental effects on an individual’s well-being. For instance, one of my colleagues used to work day and night. She was diagnosed with depression, and the reason was tremendous work pressure at office. Also, there have been certain cases of suicide in India due to an unhealthy work environment.

To summarize, working long hours regularly has multiple disadvantages, including loss of health and personal time. It is the individual’s responsibility to keep a check on work-life balance. The famous saying “Work is just a part of your life and not your entire life” is very apt for all employees to help understand the need for optimal segregation of professional and personal life.
