Some people believe that watching TV can improve children’s creative thinking while others insist / opine that TV programs have a detrimental effect on their creativity. In my opinion, it depends on what they watch on TV and how they approach this mode of entertainment.

Studies have shown that when people watch television their brain activity is minimal. This is because television offers too much detail. There are sights and sounds that the viewer just needs to consume. They do not have to work their brain cells to imagine scenes because everything is presented right before their eyes in full detail. By contrast, when people read a book, they have to visualise the scenes in their mind and this boosts brain activity. Hence, the argument that television does not do much to improve creativity in children certainly hold water.

On the other hand, there are also some television programs that inspire curiosity and creativity in children. Television programs incorporate both arts and science. At least in some children, such programs may invoke curiosity about the activities going on behind the camera. There are also many programs that encourage children to imagine beyond what is shown on the camera. For example, programs about history may encourage children to think about what life would have been like in those days. Such programs definitely boost creativity in children.

In short, television may boost or hamper creativity in children depending upon how they consume this content. If television is perceived merely as an entertainment tool, it does not benefit creativity in children or adults.
