Band 9 IELTS essay sample
In some countries, especially in the west, it is common for parents to encourage their adult children to leave home. In eastern countries, on the other hand, parents want their children to stay with them for life. In my opinion, both approaches have their merits and demerits and it is essentially a cultural thing.
When adult children move to a home of their own, they learn to become independent. They start taking care of themselves by earning money and performing household chores on their own. For example, they learn to cook, clean and wash. They even learn good budgeting skills as they have to meet their expenses without anyone helping them. On the other hand, when adult children live away from their parents, it can in some cases affect their relationships. For example, children may not have time to visit their parents on a regular basis. In addition, aged parents who need help will be at a disadvantage when their children move away and in most cases, they will have to move to a care home.
In eastern countries, families are close-knit units where it is customary for children to stay with their parents. Joint families consisting of grandparents, parents, children, uncles, aunts and their children are the norm in these countries. The biggest advantage of living in a joint family is that you always have someone to support you. For example, in this arrangement it is possible for young women with small children to work without having to leave their babies in day care. Likewise, if a family member loses their job or finds themselves in some other difficulty, they will always have someone to help them. On the other hand, when children live with their parents all their life, they fail to learn many important life skills and remain dependent on their parents for life.
To conclude, it is basically the culture that determines whether adult children will move away or stay with their parents. In my opinion, both practices have their merits and demerits and it is hard to say that one approach is better than the other.
