More and more undergraduate students are opting to work in their spare time. While temporary jobs offer several benefits, the drawbacks of this cannot be ignored. This essay will outline the positives as well as negatives of this approach.

On the one hand, there are numerous benefits to taking a part time job. Firstly, it helps the student to become independent so that they do not have to ask for pocket-money whenever they are in financial need. Secondly, taking half-time work fosters / bolsters their future career prospects as most of the employers prefer employees who have some work experience. In a recent report by Employment Exchange in India, more than 80% of 1000 job seekers got their desired job because they had experience in the domain.

On the other hand, a part time job can be distractive because students cannot concentrate on their studies while working part-time. In addition to that, young students have no money management skills and hence they may end up spending their hard-earned money on useless things. For example, according to a survey conducted by Reliance Trends Store, most of the sales come from teenagers who have just started earning.

In conclusion, there are both advantages and disadvantages to pursuing a part time job. It makes youngsters financially independent and enables them to gain valuable work experience. However, it may distract them from their studies and may even lead to wasteful spending.

Nowadays we see that quite a few undergraduate students opt for certain jobs during their free time. This trend definitely has numerous merits, such as, a chance to pursue their passion in addition to being a source of handsome pocket money, but one has to be aware of a few demerits which come in the form of distraction from their studies.

On one hand, it is a boon to work in a profession, along with going to school, which one aspires to adopt post completing their education, in addition to earning a few bucks. Students mostly select their part time jobs basis their hobbies that they want to carry forward as professionals, which thus gives impetus to their aspirations. Nevertheless, working during free time has handsome monetary rewards and also keeps youngsters engaged, rather than them usually wasting time or falling for undesirable activities such as drinking alcohol and taking drugs. For example, my nephew joined as a lab assistant over the weekends along with his medical education as he had an affinity to become a Pathologist and he did get a decent salary, with which he could afford his rentals, and hence, utilizes his idle time wisely.

On the other hand, one has to be cautious about over indulgence in what starts as a pass time activity. It is observed that in the wake of earning a few extra dollars one tends to skip attending school, which negatively impacts grades. Moreover, overworking leads to ignore personal health which in turn invites more troubles. However, most of the organisations do have a restriction on working hours, which reduces the chances for such situations.

In conclusion, I would say that, it is more advantageous to take up a part time profession to gain practical experience in sync with one’s hobbies, while keeping in mind the precautions to be taken so as one does not loose focus on their academics as well as their fitness.
