Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample

Economic progress is a significant goal for every government worldwide. Some leaders argue that it is the most essential task that should be achieved. However, according to some individuals, there are also other types of progress that are equally important for a nation. This essay will explain why several governments argue that economic growth is of the utmost importance and also explore reasons why other types of progress are deemed to be just as significant.

To begin with, the economy of a particular nation is a measurement on how advanced it is in terms of general development. This is the reason why most governments deem / consider it as the number one priority when it comes to goal achievement. An example of it would be the comparison between a third world nation and a first world country. A third world country is ranked lower in terms of development compared to a first world country because it has lower GDP, which is an economic measurement of the performance of a country.

On the other hand, some individuals argue that there are other types of progress that are also as important as economic progress. An example of this would be educational progress. To some people, educational progress leads to economic progress. When governments prioritise the improvement of the educational system, it will produce professionals who secure better paying jobs.  They will provide a good return on investment for the country by paying higher taxes.

In conclusion, economic progress is a government priority because it gives them a better position in terms of worldwide rankings. At the same time other types of progress, such as educational development, are similarly important because it culminates in economic progress as well. In my opinion, economic progress and the other types of progress should be viewed as equals because improvement does not only result from improving one aspect of a nation; rather it requires the development of various aspects of life.

Nowadays, it is often claimed that economic growth is the most significant factor for a country’s development. On the contrary, a growing number of people including myself believe that the government should work to improve all aspects of life in a country. I will explain the rationale for both sides as well as my point of view with some kind of justification in the following paragraphs.

A strong economy, according to those who espouse the former opinion, leads to sustainability of wealth. When the economy is strong, governments can rest assured that they have the power to rule the country without interference of strangers. China is a shining example of great economy in the world, they have invested all their workforce in favour of growing their economy regardless of common welfare. All the big companies in the world moved to the China to exploit their workforce as labour is considerably cheap there. It is pretty clear to everyone who has economic education that China is planning to rule the world by empowering its economy. This benefits only those in power and citizens are migrating to the US and Canada to benefit from better life quality.

However, I firmly believe that to offer citizens better life standards it is crucial to treat and value other factors in the same way as economics. For instance, empowering human rights is something that most people seek today, and the lack of it is the push factor for immigration in my country, Iran. People, even prosperous citizens, tend to go abroad as they do not feel safe here. Another important factor would be enhancing political relationships with other countries to keep travelers safe. Last but not least, in my point of view social growth is another paramount factor that countries should take into account for promoting the culture and public awareness. Otherwise, they will fall behind in terms of education.

On the basis of the reasons mentioned above I am convinced that economic development is one of the several issues that should be considered by countries and not the only one and I am inclined to believe that a country’s advancement should contribute to economic, political, and social growth at the same level.

Many authorities indeed believe in economic growth as a key element to be successful. Some individuals, however, argue that other kinds of developments are just as essential. As far as I am concerned, economic progress is not the sole item to account for a country as a developed one and plenty of factors should be considered.
Undeniably, economic progress plays a vital role in a nation’s advancement as a healthy economy can create more jobs, a high level of employment and better salaries for all citizens which culminate in higher standards of living and job satisfaction. Furthermore, if a government has a strong economy it can enhance its international reputation in terms of political influence and trading power. In addition, economic progress ensures that more money is available for the government to spend on improving infrastructures such as hospitals, education, and public transport network.
On the other hand, I agree with those who argue that various forms of progress are as significant as economic factors. For instance, human rights, social justice, equality, and democracy should be considered by all governments. Take China as an example, though this country is an absolute power of economy in the world and huge numbers of companies are established in China, the Chinese migrate to other countries like the USA and Canada seeking a better life in which human rights are paramount.
In conclusion, to my mind, although economic breakthrough is an important objective for a developed country, more items should be taken into account namely equality, social justice, and human rights.
