These days, several renowned sports persons have started advertising many products at national and international level. The advantages of this trend include publicity for the goods which are new in the market and extra income for athletes. However, there are a plethora of disadvantages that include loss of focus in the game and promotion of wrong items in the market. This essay will discuss the pros and cons of this trend / development in detail along with relevant examples.
To begin with, many companies nowadays hire popular sports persons to endorse their newly launched products so that they can boost their revenue. Moreover, people get to know more about them through ads on TV and other social platforms. For example, sales of Nike products have increased by 30% since Virat Kohli became the brand ambassador of the company. Therefore, the growth of any particular brand is indirectly dependent on promotion of their items by a well-known sports player.
On the other hand, the involvement of players in marketing gimmicks not only make them lose their concentration in the game but also have serious repercussions for their careers if they promote poor quality products. This can affect their reputation and could even invite law suits. They can sometimes face heavy criticism for their deeds outside the field for promoting the wrong items. Recently, a 6-month ban was imposed on Shakib Al Hasan, a well-known Bangladeshi cricketer, for promoting a cigarette brand on the field.
To recapitulate, there is no doubt that popular players are advertising several products and this has numerous advantages like publicity for brand new products and extra revenue for players yet we cannot ignore its negative impact on players’ performance.

In recent years, many well-known sports players are paid to endorse products on TV commercials and in the magazines. This has led to certain controversial issues.
Those having a bias towards this trend think endorsement by famous sports players might boost the sales of the branded products or services. It is simply due to the fact that being advertised by a famous sports person draws massive attention from the public. Consequently, the endorsed products will receive noticeable attention because of the fame of the sports player, and the sales will burgeon just as advertisers wish. In addition, sports players put a lot of effort into their game. They work hard against all odds to achieve what they have achieved. Thus, they are also a source of inspiration for young people. When youngsters see these people in adverts, they are also inspired to work harder. This is a win-win situation for the players, brands and the public.
However, recent news also shows the adverse influences of this trend. Some sports players have demonstrated criminal or anti-social behaviours which might cause negative impact on adolescents. For example, some NBA players are habitually involved in drug or violence related misconducts, while they earn enormous money from endorsing products. This might give young people wrong impressions that taking drugs or beating people wrongfully are cool things and make sports players even more famous and richer.
Therefore, although hiring famous sports athletes for the sake of branding and marketing products might benefit commercial companies, certain measures should be taken to prevent the negatives on young generation. Companies need to ensure that they are hiring someone with a clean reputation.
