Due to the increasing population, there is a necessity of the construction of new houses in several countries. In my opinion, more housing projects should be developed in rural areas with proper planning.
The growing number of residents require more housing, but, that also means the creation of infrastructures such as roads, utilities, schools, and medical facilities. If residences were to be added in the cities, the marginal cost incurred on providing additional infrastructure will be relatively less, for example, a few more rooms can be added by adding a floor in an existing hospital or a school. On the other hand, building new infrastructure in the countryside would be very expensive.
As people would like to stay closer to where employment opportunity exists, the overpopulation will lead to undue pressure on the existing utility facilities, the congestion on roads and hence increased pollution. This would deteriorate the quality of life, for which primarily, the people leave the rural areas to live in the cities. At the same time, overspending on the urban infrastructure depletes the budgetary resources for the rural infrastructure.
But not all kinds of jobs require living close to the big towns. Building communities in suburban areas would help them grow as satellite townships. This, in turn, will lead to the increased requirement of schools, hospitals and shopping arcades in these areas and hence more employment opportunities Henceforward lesser need for people to migrate to the bigger cities. With better urban planning, we can avoid the country to be the pockets of rich and poor or developed and underdeveloped areas.
To conclude, I believe, that in order to ensure the better overall development of the country, they should develop the infrastructure in the countryside, so that opportunities are created in far off regions and imbalance in growth of the population and the infrastructure can be curtailed.
