Band 8 IELTS essay sample
Staying in a country where one has to communicate in a foreign language can cause grevious social problems and some practical problems as well. I somewhat agree with this statement.
Firstly, moving to a new country is a big challenge. Having to learn a new language is the biggest challenge. Culture shock is another problem.
Language is the main hurdle that people face when they move to a different country. If one cannot communicate effectively in the language that is spoken in that country, one’s ability to socialize becomes very limited. They cannot blend into the community easily. Consequently, they cannot make a lot of new friends or attend communal events.
On the practical side, the person’s work can be affected if they are not able to communicate effectively and fluently at their workplace. It can also affect them in many other ways. For example, it may get them in some trouble if they fail to understand and obey certain laws because of the language barrier that they have. Sometimes, if they are unable to read safety signs, they can pose a threat for themselves or even others.
Furthermore, it is often believed that a person thinks in his or her native language and then speaks in the foreign language. If this is actually true, it could slow down the person’s ability to take decisions and converse fluently.
On the positive side, I feel that this hindrance is temporary and can be easily overcome by mastering the foreign language. It gives us an opportunity to learn and experience a new culture. Moreover, once a person starts living in a place where he or she has to speak a foreign language, it becomes very easy to pick up the new language and break the social and practical barriers listed above.
To conclude, I somewhat agree that having to speak a foreign language can cause some social and practical problems. However, these are only temporary and can easily be overcome if one keeps an open mind and tries to master the foreign language.
