Band 8 IELTS essay sample

As society is getting gradually more globalized, some believe there is less of a need to learn local languages and that learning English should be the primary focus. In my opinion, there are good reasons to learn both the local language and English.

Firstly, we cannot deny the fact that the world is always getting more connected and that it is of great importance to be able to communicate efficiently with people from different parts of the planet. As English has become the most widely used language, there is a strong case for giving priority to teaching and learning English. It has become essential to understand and to be able to communicate proficiently in the English language wherever you are in the world, as there will always be someone who is able to speak English wherever you go. Another argument for prioritizing English learning is that the business world is increasingly using English as a common language. This could potentially mean that companies and employees who lack knowledge and skills in the English language might miss out on important opportunities.

On the contrary, I believe it is of great importance to keep learning local languages, as this is a big part of our culture, and ultimately of who we are. In my opinion, learning English does not have to be at the expense of learning the local language. I sincerely believe that it is both important and possible to have an educational system that gives equal priority to both English and the local language. From my experience of living in a country where English is the first language, I can claim that most English speakers are jealous of anyone who is bilingual and wish that they are able to understand and communicate in a second language as well.

In summary, I believe there are strong arguments for learning both English and the local language, and that both should be prioritized in the educational systems.
