Band 7 IELTS essay sample

Since the last few decades, emphasis on teaching English in school has increased enormously and importance of local languages has decreased. Some believe that children must start learning English language right from their schooling years. Others believe that this will consequently lead to the demise of local languages. This essay will discuss the importance of all languages, and some measures that would help to preserve our native languages.

Indeed, there are multiple reasons for emphasizing learning the English language. The first one is that in today’s world, it’s not just a language; it has become a gateway to the world because this is a technological era where most digital gadgets’ primary language is English only. Moreover, information in all fields is mostly available in English only. Take research papers as an example, which are mostly published in English; hence, the publisher or reader both should have a strong command of the language. I believe that for the strongest command it is conducive that it taught from a tender age.

On the other hand, we also need to protect our native language. I believe that mother tongue is like bedrock or foundation for all other language learning. One report from Texas University reveals that those who have a good command of their mother tongue can easily learn other languages. On the top of that I have observed that people can express their emotions the best merely in their regional language. Thus, I hold opine that learning mother tongue is as important as English. And for preserving it among people should be through practicing writing, reading and speaking in the mother tongue at school, plus, taking exams in their indigenous language is the best strive to sustain students’ mind. Furthermore, I suppose that the government should enforce the rule of providing primary education only in mother tongue is the best way.

To conclude, this essay has described the importance of learning English as well as the local languages. In my opinion, we can teach students as much as we want to and there should be no boundaries especially when it comes to language learning.
