It is widely accepted that people desire to have several materialistic things in their life such as a refrigerator, a television and a car in order to make life more comfortable. Although these commodities are useful for people, in my opinion, in the long run, their benefits are eclipsed by their limitations.

To begin with, there are some merits to having these fundamental facilities such as a car, a fridge and a TV in the life. The first and foremost is that they raise an individual’s standard of living and make it more convenient. A car, for example, allows people to travel comfortably and reach their destination in a short span of time. In addition to this, the perishable food products can be preserved in a refrigerator for a long time and thus avoid wastage. Apart from this, the television is a great source of news and entertainment.

On the other side, despite having the aforementioned advantages, they have various shortcomings which cannot be neglected. The worst problem is the environmental pollution which is caused by the exhaust and toxic fumes of automobiles. Because of it, the air quality is being degraded and can cause numerous severe Respiratory diseases in people. To illustrate this view, research conducted by Melbourne university has found that 60-70% of the population suffer from pulmonary disorders owing to the inhalation of polluted air. Moreover, it is a proven fact that refrigerators release CFCs which can lead to the depletion of ozone layer.

In conclusion, all the available data provide concrete evidence that excessive use of these modern inventions can have adverse effects on the environment and the health of the society, regardless of their benefits; thus, I believe that the demerits of a TV, a car or a fridge, overshadow its merits.
