Band 8 IELTS essay sample

Scientists forecast that by the middle of the 21st century all automobiles will be operated by computers. There are a variety of reasons for this trend and in my opinion, there are both positive and negative aspects to this development.

Driverless cars will become a reality primarily because of advancements in the field of artificial intelligence and improvements in hardware capacity. Over the past few decades powerful machine learning algorithms have been created, resulting in the development of autonomous driving software. Although the current state-of-the-art car still needs some assistance of a human driver, the day is not far away when an automobile will be run without a person. Automobile hardware and driving software have not only become efficient but also economical. Tesla, for example, has sixteen cameras on its flagship vehicle, Model-S. It would not have been possible without the unprecedented growth of hardware.

On the other hand, self-driven cars will make drivers redundant and cause unemployment. Also, if there is a glitch in the software driving the car, it can have disastrous consequences. Every system can break down and it is not possible to assume that a driver less car will be completely safe at all times. Of course, technology is developing and such risks will eventually be mitigated; even so, this is a possibility that cannot be fully ruled out.

In conclusion, it is safe to conclude that future cars will not be driven by humans primarily due to unforeseeable development in software as well as hardware systems. In my opinion, this development will, nonetheless, have both positive and negative aspects to it.
