Band 9 IELTS essay sample

According to some people youngsters should get advice from their seniors rather than their peers. I can only partially agree with this view. While I do admit that our elders are wiser and more experienced than us, they may not always be able to give advice that is appropriate for the age we live in.

On the one hand, our parents and grandparents have lived much longer than us. Thanks to the vast experience they have, they are a treasure of wisdom. Elders can be role models for young people who are still exploring the early stage of their life. Moreover, young people can learn from the mistakes of seniors. Getting advice from elders prevents them from going astray and committing the same mistakes that old people have made.

On the other hand, since many old people had fewer opportunities to receive formal education, their thoughts tend to be more rigid and traditional. For instance, my 85-year-old grandmother still believes in the conservative Confucian theory that women are inferior to men. In her opinion, women should stay at home and take care of children. Furthermore, many seniors are highly superstitious and refuse to accept scientific wisdom. Many of them even refuse to consult a doctor when they fall ill and instead choose to follow some home remedies they learned from their parents. While some of these remedies have some scientific grounds, others are hazardous to our health and safety.

To conclude, old people are worthy of youngsters’ respect. There are always important lessons that young people can learn when seniors share their life stories. At the same time, their values and outlooks on life tend to be traditional and may not always suit our life and times.

Contemporaneously, we live in complex societies, where we have to deal with a variety of issues that require close attention. In this scenario, relationships are the key points since they serve, most of the times, as a source of counselling. Some individuals believe that more lived people are wiser advisors than youngers. It appears to me that it can variate according to the specific situations, where youngers may better understand feelings and olders can be more rational.

Analysing one perspective, people generally have friends from close age-level, and they often look for these friends to share emotions. To illustrate, I can give a personal example when I had a relationship with a woman. At the time, we were in love and had plans to get married, nevertheless, we unfortunatelly broke up due to differences in objectives of life. Consequently, I felt more confortable by visiting a close friend to share my feelings instead of doing só with my mother for instance.

Considering another perspective, family members mean a stronger and longer relationship in people’s lives. Commonly, these members represent senior links that people trust and get advices from, however a positive talk might depend on specific circumstances. For instance, I can detail a relevant conversation that I had with my mother two years ago, when I was considering to move to another town for my graduation studies. This was an important step in my life and she served as a solid source of information, helping to prepare for the correct preparations.

To sum up, every individual has a single personality and experiences, and they may help us in a variety of moments. Advices can be advantageous or also disadvantageous, it will always depend of the issue and the listener. In other words, we need to be sensible to choose the best advisor for each decision we take.
