Band 8 IELTS essay sample
In today’s world, children are obsessed with electronic gizmos. Experts have argued that it is essential for youngsters to play outdoor activities rather than staying at home and playing computer games. I am fully in favour of this idea and in this essay I will support my view with valid arguments and examples.
The main reason why I support the thesis is that it helps them to have better physical health. Nowadays, most of the youngsters are overweight and this is because they do not participate in sports which require physical activities. Playing sports such as basketball and football can help juveniles to get rid of fatigue that creeps into their day during the course of the day; thus, it keeps them mentally and psychologically healthy. Moreover, playing outdoor sports enhances their blood circulation and increases their metabolism. By contrast, if teenagers stay indoors for longer hours, they will not burn the extra calories they have gained from eating fast food; hence, they will be overweight.
In addition to this, taking part in outdoor sports can enhance their social skills. Children can brush up their communication skills, problem solving skills, and leadership skills when they play outdoor sports. Playing cricket, for example, not only makes the youngster physically fit, but also teaches them how to communicate with their team mates, how to cope with a difficult situation and how to take informed decisions. The argument goes that if juveniles are kept busy playing with their Play Stations, they will lack independent decision making skills throughout their life.
In conclusion, I reiterate that I fully support this argument that youngsters should engage in outdoor activities as it will assist them to have better health. In addition to this, it develops certain invaluable social skills in them. Nevertheless, it is important to strike a balance between studies and outdoor activities so that their academic performance does not suffer.

Nowadays, youngsters have increased dependency on technology and social media. There is a notion that juveniles should resort to playing outdoor games rather than being glued to their game stations at home all day long. In my opinion, I agree with the statement of children playing outdoors and having face to face conversation with other humans.
Physical sports has shown to have great benefits in human life. Firstly, children who regularly play outdoors tend to have better health than those who stay indoors. Research shows that the group of children who prefer staying at home are considerably more over-weight as compared to those who participate in outdoor activities. Furthermore, playing sports has a positive impact on an individual’s mood by maintaining its hormonal balance. It is also noticed that children who spend the majority of their time playing online games and on social networks are prone to having weaker eyesight when compared with those who practice sports regularly.
Furthermore, outdoor activities of children can have an impact on family and society as a whole. Public parks which once used to be crowded with families and friends are now haunted places. While adults have prioritized work, public life has gone down the drain. By being involved in traditional pastimes, the youth can learn new skills, improve and develop communication and interpersonal skills, bring the community closer to each other and last but not the least, bring life back to public parks. Studies have shown, societies with more interaction among them are increasingly safe and happier than those with no or minimal interactions.
To sum up, I am evident that outdoor sports and activities should be encouraged because of its many health-related benefits and the impact it can have on society. Parents should take up this matter seriously to make sure their children are not left out for computers to look after them.
This seems band 7 to me.
It cannot be disputed that with modernization and development of technology, electronic devices have replaced the conventional modes of entertainment. It is argued by many that children should indulge their leisure time by playing outdoor games and involving in conventional ways of entertainment rather than depending on computer games and social media. This essay will analyse how much it is hazardous for children to be involved in such activities by explaining its drawbacks.
Primarily, the children, playing video games most of their time, remain confined to their homes with little or no interaction with other fellows. In addition, it makes them more lazy and lethargic. For instance, one American study shows that youngsters, who play video games have less activity level and face more social problems as compared to those who don’t spend much time in front of computers. Hence, this laziness and absence of societal manners will also affect their mental health.
Moreover, increased screen time and sitting in the same posture for longer period have an impact on their physical health, for example now a day people at such a young age are facing backache problems. One recent research showed that 90% of the people diagnosed with eye cancer has been using screens for longer than nine hrs. Thus, a young person should play outdoor sports, instead of using screens for longer hours, as it will provide the daily dose of exercise a young body needs.
To conclude, it is not hard to see that children are more likely to benefit from athletic actives rather than spending their precious time on video games. It is hoped that such transition should be discouraged by parents in every household.
This essay lacks clarity. Grammar is another issue. This is in the band 6 to 6.5 range.
