Is it Appropriate to Use Slang Words in Academic Writing?

Do you enjoy writing essays? Are you actually familiar with the specific “writing code”? The objective of a good writer should be to express ideas clearly; each paragraph must be readily understood. This means that you need to overlook the specific grammatical form, language, pretty much the correlation between the ideas and expression forms.

Facts

Believe it or not, the respective presented ideas may lose courage and strength, especially if the verbal expression is poor. Moreover, if your essay is full of slang, the text has some ideas that do not match with others, plus if the spelling is wrong, the outcome will not be good. Essays with drafting problems, spelling errors and vocabulary usually give a bad impression of the student and hence it is advisable to be careful. Slang is not encouraged and should be avoided at all times.

According to experts, the most common mistakes that have a lot of influence in the writing of an essay are:

  • The ambiguity or vagueness of ideas: some individuals write and speak the same way.
  • Customization and spelling issues that can cause confusion when reading. Please note that slang is not always understood.

Common expressions

Nowadays there is a tendency to use everyday language or conversational slang in essays. You should remember that the technical language is formal and has its rules. What you may state in a conversation, i.e. in colloquial language, may sound perfect, but when you type it, odds are, it will be completely wrong.

Writing according to the level of the reader

Students, who write a paper, should always be aware that their essay will be read by individuals other than the teacher. Those other individuals may be from different nationalities, educational backgrounds etc.  Therefore, when writing, you should not be missing anything, nor assume that everyone will get your slang. Ideas should be totally clear so that everyone can understand.

Using personal pronoun

One of the most important standards in the technical language is the use of impersonal, which is to say that you should not use the pronouns “I” or “we” or the possessive pronoun “mine” and “ours”.

Additional Recommendations

Write short sentences. The main idea should always be strengthened in 2 or 3 sentences that may support the substance of the text.

Remember

Very long sentences make the reader miss the main idea and hence they will need to read the sentence from the beginning repeatedly to understand its meaning. Moreover, to avoid careless mistakes, please try to proofread and read aloud. While you write, try to seek ways to simplify the sentences without losing the specific value.
