Indeed, the world is struggling to deal with growing traffic congestion and pollution issues. According to some people, raising the price of petrol is the best method to tackle these concerns. I totally disagree with this viewpoint. This essay will discuss my perspective and suggest some other steps / measures to mitigate these problems.
To start with, increasing the fuel prices will not dissuade wealthy people from using their private cars. Because of their deep pockets they will continue to use their vehicles and pollute our environment. Besides this, increasing the price of petrol will directly raise the rate of inflation which is detrimental for poor people. If we increase the petrol prices, the logistic cost will increase. As a result, the price of basis household items will increase and consumers will feel more burden on their shoulders; hence, it is not a wise suggestion to increase the petrol price to reduce traffic and pollution issues.
There are many ways to tackling these problems. The government ought to invest more on improving the public transport infrastructure. They should also incentivise daily commuters to use public transport more often instead of using their own vehicle. This step will drastically reduce traffic on the roads. Moreover, the government should enact a law to ban old vehicles that are not environment friendly. For instance, the Indian government has banned all petrol cars older than 15 years to curb the air pollution issues.
In conclusion, increasing the price of petrol will not discourage wealthy people from using their private vehicles for the sake of environment and at the same time; hence, in my opinion, the government should put more effort into improving public transport so that commuters use that and ban all old vehicles which are not environment friendly.
