Band 7 IELTS essay sample
People all over the world travel using cars. Some people believe that in the coming years, drivers will be replaced by automated cars. In my opinion, although driverless cars can be timesaving, the cons outweigh the benefits, because people may end up losing their jobs and also succumb to road traffic accidents.
The idea of driverless cars is optimistic, because it can save a lot of time for passengers. Quite often, drivers in big cities struggle to navigate through traffic and end up arriving late for a pick-up. This problem can be easily circumvented by automation. Cars programmed by artificial intelligence will probably navigate better through traffic and will be on time to receive customers.
However, such vehicles will render people jobless. Most people without a formal education depend on mean jobs such as driving cars or trucks to support their families. For example, 40 % of Mumbai’s population depend on taxis to get to work. Taxi drivers belong to the below-poverty line of society and often struggle to make ends meet. If automation took over their jobs, the effect on their lives will be devastating.
Additionally, self-programmed vehicles are known to cause mass casualties on roads. It is said that such vehicles are not programmed to think like humans. Therefore, they do not anticipate events such as movement of people across roads. For instance, the Tesla-operated car caused a huge loss of lives while being driven through a residential layout in America. This accident was attributed to the lack of foresight that machines have unlike humans.
To summarise, we are stepping into an era of vehicular automation which will immensely benefit customers. However, I believe the benefits do not supersede the drawbacks. Driverless cars will be a huge blow to drivers, because they will be unemployed. Furthermore, such modern cars are also capable of causing road traffic accidents.
