In most countries, students tend to take a year gap after finishing their high school and prior to commencing their university education. Several countries support this system; however, it is critical for young people to weigh this step carefully in terms of its positives & negatives before going ahead.

On the one hand / To start with the benefits, the most obvious advantage is that people who are certain to go in a specific direction after their education can invest their gap year in pursuit of activities that they enjoy. Thus, it enables them to gain valuable work experience which improves their performance when they enter the workplace later. Another positive aspect of traveling at this age is that people are less burdened with responsibilities at this particular point of time; therefore, it is the best opportunity to experience and know the world around. This can also provide them knowledge to choose their career paths. For instance, many people end up becoming photographers or architects after studying another subject at university. Working or traveling for a year allows them to discover their true passion.

However, the year-drop can sometimes raise problems in their future career prospects as companies do not encourage any discontinuity in the course of studies. Thus, it limits their future job opportunities. Another major disadvantage is that children will lose interest in resuming their studies. When they work for a year, they will start earning money and enjoying some freedom. They will not want to lose it. Hence, they are unlikely to complete their education. Unfortunately, this prevents them from landing good jobs.

To sum up, taking a gap year is advantageous if students are confident that they will resume their studies after working or traveling for a while. If they fail to return to university, this practice will have disastrous consequences for their future.
