Marriage is one of the most important ceremonies / milestones in a person’s life. In some parts of the world, marriages are arranged by family members. On the other hand, in countries like the USA, people mostly choose their partner by themselves. This essay will discuss both cultures.
In arranged marriages, first the groom’s and bride’s families meet. They share details about their families, financial status, their children’s education, hobbies and interests. Some of the communities, especially in the rural parts of countries like India, make sure that the religion matches as well. The advantage of this approach is that families establish a connection which reduces the chances of disagreements and arguments in future.
However, the disadvantages outnumber the pros. The prospective groom and bride are not allowed to meet before marriage alone. Since they do not get to spend time with each other, they literally take the risk of marrying a stranger. Consequently, they might end up in an unhappy marriage.
On the contrary, in love marriages, people chose their partner without parent’s involvement. Couples mostly date long enough to figure out each other’s likes, dislikes, perspectives etc. Many lovers choose to live together in the same home for a while before deciding on marriage. This is called “live-in”. The upside of this arrangement is that the couple gets a fair chance to make a choice by their own judgement and comfort. They get to know plethora of things about one another even before becoming husband and wife. The only con of this approach is that if the families do not consent to the relationship later, the couple might have to face many problems convincing them.
In conclusion, even though I am personally biased towards the arrangement of people choosing their partner by themselves, I cannot) say arranged marriages are totally wrong.
