During an economic downturn, many people from various sectors may be laid off. People hold the view that artists are no exception, and therefore, they should be eligible for government assistance like everyone else. I agree with this view for a number of reasons.

To start with, the government ought to step in to protect these talents from extinction. Unlike other professionals, artists must devote years to pursue their art and gain artistic competence, in addition to undergoing training and putting forth a lot of effort. Yet, they are usually the first to be hit by slumps. Second, even though art is not typically regarded as essential as other fields such as education, healthcare, or business, its therapeutic effect on humanity cannot be overlooked. Listening to music, for example, can calm your mind, uplift your mood, as well as relieve you of pain and ease your anxiety. A novel or painting may provide an escape from reality while helping you accept your own circumstances. Therefore, artists and their works will probably be needed during a recession when many people will be experiencing emotional turmoil in addition to other problems.

However, there are those who argue that in the case of economic slump the government should focus on saving the most essential sectors like food and beverage, utilities, banking, healthcare and social security. The argument is invalid in my opinion, since artists are also impacted by the undesired situation and thus are entitled to equal compensation.

I believe that if there is a financial depression, the government’s assistance schemes should cover all the affected careers and there is no legitimate reason to exclude artists from this programme.
