It is argued that people who use their own vehicles should be heavily taxed so that public transportation system can be developed from the tax money. However, there are some benefits and drawbacks to such a trend that need to be considered.

Firstly, the number of vehicles that enter urban areas may be reduced due to the high taxation on private car owners. As a result of this, it may prevent / discourage / stop) people from using private cars and they might seek alternative modes of transportation. Secondly, it is known that many public transport services in the country are in poor condition due to the lack of financial resources. Therefore, imposing tax on private car users could be a way for governments to earn some money and invest it for upgrading public transport services. Consequently, people will not hesitate to travel by buses or trains any more.

On the other hand, there are some negative outcomes to this approach. Imposing unreasonable fines on its citizens can lead to disputes between the authorities and the general public. In addition, there are many countries which are underdeveloped and have low personal incomes and tax on private vehicles will put them in more financial difficulties. In this regard, people get disappointed and they may conduct strikes or protests which may be harmful for the country’s economy. If the government imposes heavy tax on private car owners and allocate the fund for improving the public transportation, it aids to tackle the traffic congestion issues. Although there are some minor disadvantages, this method brings incredible benefits to both individuals and society.
On the one hand when more tax is introduced to private car owners, people would be less likely to own private cars. Therefore, people would either be encouraged to use the public transport or would prefer walking, if the distance to their office is less. In both the ways, traffic congestion, which is one of the major issue in cities, could be considerably reduced. Secondly, the more the number of vehicles are, the more likely pollution would be. That means when people are more inclined towards using the public transportation system, environment is greatly benefited. Finally, commuting by public transportation gives people a chance to interact with others. This improves the social skills of people thereby benefiting society as a whole.
On the other hand people are not supposed to take detours by means of public transportation system. In other words, people might have to travel long way to reach their destination. For example, since people cannot take short cuts, travelling by means of public transportation might cause not only wastage of energy but also squander time. Another point to consider is that since the frequency of public transport is less, people might need to wait for the vagarious transport. That means that we could not rely on public transport when there is an emergency.
To conclude, when private cars are imposed with heavy tax, people depend more on public transport. Even though this trend has certain disadvantages, it paves the way for bringing tremendous advantage to individuals as well as society.
