Band 8 IELTS essay sample
A growing number of children are spending most of their day using different electronic devices these days. According to some people, this excessive screen time can be detrimental for them in many ways. I agree with this view to a large extent for two main reasons which will be discussed in this essay.
Firstly, uncontrolled use of modern gadgets can negatively influence children’s health. During childhood, children undergo many developmental changes that have a direct impact on their future wellbeing. Children can suffer from many vision related problems ranging from decreased visual acuity to astigmatism due to excessive screen time. In addition, it can increase the risk of obesity among younger individuals. Recently, a dramatic spike has been observed in the rate of obesity among children aged between 5 and 10 and it believed to be associated with the increased use of these electronic devices. Hence, overuse of these appliances can be hazardous to children’s health.
Furthermore, overindulgence of children in these gadgets deprive them of the ability to effectively socialize. When they spend most of their time staring at these devices, they do not get the taste of reality, and eventually become socially aloof. Since childhood is the prime time for learning social skills, children who spend too much time on devices fail to acquire them and subsequently develop social anxiety. In other words, owing to lack of exposure to the outside world, newer generations tend to avoid social situations and show autistic behavior.
In conclusion, the unrestrained usage of electronic media has become increasingly common among children and it can lead to many harmful consequences. In my opinion, such a practice not only has a bad impact on children’s physical health but also make them socially incompetent.
