Respect for elders has declined in today’s society. The major reasons are the lack of proper teaching at home and influence of materialism. This essay will discuss the negative consequences of this development for our society.
The practice of disrespecting older people should be discouraged. Seniors deserve respect for their wisdom and the sacrifices they made to make our lives better. For example, if we are living a good life today it is because of the hard work of our parents and grandparents. It is important for children to understand this and give their elders the respect they deserve. Parents have an important role to play in this. If children grow up seeing their parents respect their parents and other elderly people, they will automatically imbibe that habit. It is also important for moral education to be a part of the school curriculum. Children learn a lot of bad habits from movies and showing disrespect for elders is one of them. Such influences need to be nipped in the bud.
The consequences of showing disrespect to elders are many. First, it makes the family an unhappy place and weakens the bonding between seniors and juniors. No matter how successful or educated young people are, they still have a lot to learn from their parents and grandparents. By showing disrespect to their seniors and demonstrating a lack of willingness to learn from them, youngsters are losing an important opportunity to acquire some wisdom. Also, they are teaching the same manners to their children who will one day show the same disrespect to them. Eventually, it will create a society where no one respects the other.
Therefore, children must be taught to respect elders and value human feelings. This basic quality has to be cultivated from childhood. They must be taught about the invaluable contribution of seniors. Respecting and appreciating one another will make the world a better place to live in.
