Band 8 IELTS Essay Sample

It is a contentious issue whether surveillance cameras for security should be used or not. Some people argue that surveillance cameras help to reduce crime. However, others insist that the presence of cameras violate the privacy of people. In my opinion, the benefits offered by video cameras outweigh the disadvantages.

On the positive side, proponents of CCTVs put forth this argument that this initiative aids in reducing the crime rate. To elaborate, criminal activities often take place in the public places and installation of these electronic equipments in these places enables the police force to monitor the happenings.  In addition to that, recorded footage can be used in court as strong evidence. Therefore, culprits will think twice prior to committing a crime. In other words, this way of rendering protection will disseminate word to potential offenders; consequently, they will abstain from perpetrating the criminal act.

On the negative side, opponents argue that cameras violate the privacy of citizens, because, they invade personal space of people by recording their actions continuously. Furthermore, these gadgets are part of technology, which can be hacked and stolen information could be put into use for malicious purposes. Another reason is that perpetrators can hide their identity by covering face.  In this case, these security cameras are useless.

To conclude, having analyzed both the merits and demerits, it is evident that video cameras are immensely beneficial for keeping a check on criminals and criminal activity. Thus, the advantages of installing CCTVs definitely outweigh the disadvantages which are rather insignificant.

In modern age, the video cameras in public places has been installed. Although some people believe that they support security, some citizens find them as privacy invaders. I believe that there are more benefits to these cameras than disadvantages.

there are some arguments againts surveillance cameras. to begin with, some citizens and privacy advocates think that they are intrusive. These digital devices captures individual’s pictures in streets, shops, and other public places though he or she do not like to be seen by authorities. Morever, the effectiveness of these kind of cameras is doubted. Some kinds of crimes such as the threat of terroristic attacks can not be deterred. A suicidal bomber is not going to stop killing himself by the fact that there is a camera in place.
on the other hand I argue that, they are more beneficial than being just an useless invader. firstly, they will decrease the crime rate, in another word, they act like as a deterrent to committing the crime. Robbers and criminals are afraid of getting caught by the police, so they try not to be in a place with surveillance cameras. For example: in big shopping malls, video cameras prevent from shoplifting. secondly, they do help with police investigations. Any footage that captures a crime being committed, can be used in a court of law as evidence against accused person. That can help the judge to convict the criminal or can prove someone’s innocence.

In conclusion, while there are some drawbacks to the video cameras, I believe that they are more of a benefit. they can reduce crime rate and help the police for carring out their investigations.
