IELTS Speaking Test in Canada

The following questions were asked in an IELTS speaking test recently held in Canada. Here are some tips for scoring well in the Speaking module.

Examiner: Describe the place where you live now.

Candidate: I live in a small town in Kerala. It is a nice place with a rich culture and heritage. People belonging to all religions live there in perfect harmony.

Examiner: Is it important to take vacations? Why?

Candidate: Yes. In my opinion, everyone needs to recharge their batteries every now and then. A vacation is perfect for that. Most of us have very stressful jobs. If we don’t take a break once in a while, it will affect our efficiency and quality of life.

Examiner: How do you spend the time on your vacation?

Candidate: I enjoy doing nothing when I am on a vacation. I can spend hours on a beach just counting the waves or admiring the sunset. My job requires me to work long hours and I get hardly any time to rest or relax. So, when I am on a holiday, I do hardly anything.

Examiner: Do you usually spend it with other people or alone?

Candidate: I spend it with my wife. Sometimes, our parents also join us. We are big fans of family holidays. Occasionally, I also travel with my friends.

Examiner: What was your best vacation? Why?

Candidate: We went to Goa in May to celebrate our third wedding anniversary. This was the best vacation I had in a long time. Both my wife and I enjoy beach holidays. We spent a week in Goa. This was my second vacation in Goa and this time around we also explored the town and ate a variety of local delicacies. We did a bit of shopping too.

Examiner: Do you usually carry a bag?

Candidate: Yes. I always carry a bag when I go to work.

Examiner: What kind of bag do you prefer?

Candidate: I prefer faux leather or cloth bags that I can carry on my back. I always carry some books or magazines and a bottle of water when I go out. So, I prefer a bag that can easily carry these things.

It is easy to obtain a good score in the Speaking module. You just need to express your ideas fluently. Note that in the Speaking module, there are no right or wrong answers. The examiner is only interested in assessing your ability to speak English. They are not testing your general knowledge. Here are some tips for obtaining band 8 in the Speaking module.
