IELTS Sample Letter 3

The following letter writing task was found on an IELTS test held in Algeria in September.

You bought an electronic device from an online store. Unfortunately it was damaged when it reached your hands. Write a letter to the seller and explain:
What the damage was and what you want them to do.

You can spend 20 minutes on this task. You have to write at least 150 words.

Here is a model answer

Dear Sir / Madam

I am writing this to inform you that the laptop computer I bought from your online store had been damaged by the time it reached my hands. I placed my order (no: 29768) for the laptop on September 28th. It was shipped on that day itself and was supposed to reach my hands by October 3rd. The courier guy delivered the laptop on October 2nd. It seemed to be in good condition and therefore I accepted it.

However, when I tried to power the laptop on, I discovered that it was damaged. It suffers from severe booting problems. The screen is also defective with poor viewing angles. What’s more, the model I ordered had a matte display, but the one I received has a glossy display.

I don’t know how this could have happened. As I don’t want to keep a defective machine like this I am sending it back. I request you to replace it with a brand new laptop and ship it to my address at the earliest.

Thanks for your time

Sincerely
James
