IELTS Band 8 letter sample: Letter to the landlord

You and your family are living in a rented accommodation in an English-speaking country. You are not satisfied with the condition of some of the furniture.

Write a letter to the landlord. In your letter:

  • introduce yourself
  • explain what is wrong with the furniture
  • say what action you would like the landlord to take

Dear Mr. Smith,

I am Ameer Khan; I rented your apartment located at Heritage building, 8th floor, last week.

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the state of the furniture in the apartment. It seems that the place has neither been cleaned nor inspected for decades. There is dust all over the tables and chairs in the living room and all over the kitchens facilities. My family and I also feel unsafe around some of the items. For example, I would expect the curtain in the bedroom to fall off at anytime! Also, I do not feel safe using the stove due to the strange sounds it produces when it is turned on.

Therefore, I demand changing the apartment. I will be happy to relocate temporarily and return to the current apartment once the furniture is in a more favourable condition. In this case, I expect that you will provide us with temporary accommodation for this period. Alternatively, I would kindly request for a refund as per our contract.

I await your prompt reply.

Regards,

Ameer Khan
