Friendship provides companionship. A friend is a person we can share our joys and sorrows with. It is a true and genuine feeling yet it yet it can be complicated too. This essay will discuss the qualities of a good friend and also state the reaons that could damage / destroy a friendship.
Firstly, it is essential for a good friend to be helpful and empathetic. Most often people depend on friends under needful situations and seek their help rather than that of a family member. A friend should be able to analyze the situation and lend help whenever needed. Furthermore, another essential quality of a friend is to be supportive and non-judgmental. Friends should support and correct one another when it comes to decision making. Experts claim that those who correct each other will be united under all circumstances.
However, not every friendship is destined to last forever. Over the period of time, many friendships diminish and the reason for this is distance. Migration of people to different parts of the globe has reduced personal interactions. People often find excuses to skip meeting with friends because of the physical distance between them. Another important factor is the busy schedule and change in priorities. Due to busy work and personal commitment people lack the motivation to spend a few minutes with friends. Increase in social networking applications is probably another reason as more people spend time making new friends rather than retaining old ones.
To conclude, one needs to be responsive, helpful, supportive and non-judgmental to be a great friend. However, friendship may weaken over time due to lack of personal connection and increased use of social networking apps.
