Band 9 IELTS essay sample

Recently, there has been a sharp increase in criminal activities all over the world especially among youngsters. The causes of this development include poverty, unemployment, substance abuse, family problems and influence of media. Creating more job opportunities, cracking down on drug mafia and censoring violent content in the media are effective ways to curb this menace.

Unemployment is one of the main causes of crime. It leads to poverty. When people cannot earn a living through legitimate means, they will take to crime. This is not really their fault. We are now living in an age where the rich are getting richer and the poor are getting poorer. This creates a lot of resentment among the lowest strata of society and they often retaliate by committing crime. Mental illness is another cause of crime. Often times, substance abuse and family problems are the factors leading to mental health problems. Influence of media is another significant factor. Movies and television shows often glorify crime. This sends a very wrong message to the society especially young people with impressionable minds.

Creating more job opportunities is one of the most effective ways to reduce crime. When people can earn enough to make a living, they will not want to commit crime. Launching various social welfare schemes is equally important. The government needs to ensure that even the poorest of the poor have their basic needs met. It is equally important to crack down on drug mafia. Substance abuse is now rampant among young people and it is quite common for people who do drugs to commit crimes. By coming down heavily on the narcotics mafia, the government can save young people from the grip of drugs. Another solution is to censor media violence. Movies and television programmes promoting violence should not be allowed to screen.

In conclusion, criminal activities are on the rise due to a number of factors like poverty, unemployment and media influence. Creating more job opportunities, ensuring social welfare and censoring harmful media content are some of the solutions.

Crime appears to be rising in most countries in the world, especially among young people – Band 8 IELTS essay sample

In recent times, many young people across the world are indulging in illegal activities. Criminal tendencies tend to stem from poverty and unemployment; however, there are some remedies.  This essay shall elucidate them.

Poverty is perhaps one of the major causes of crime. Young people living in countries with high rates of economic deprivation fail to secure a living in legitimate ways. As a result, they invest their time in criminal activities. These are not only an easy means of getting what they want but also do not require any special / specific talents. Another cause is an increase in the unemployment rate. A huge proportion of the youth is unemployed as per a report by the United Nations. Naturally, this makes the youth frustrated with a feeling of resentment towards the system. Many of them then rebel and resort to crimes early on their lives.

Creating more employment opportunities is the most effective solution. If people can earn their livelihood in legit ways, they are less likely to indulge in crime. It is equally important to create an effective law enforcement system. In many countries the judicial proceedings take too long and criminals often do not receive the punishment they deserve. This has to change. There should be a speedy and honest system to dispense justice. Also, the punishment should be proportionate to the gravity of the crime. If we look around we can see that the crime rate is low in countries where there are stringent punishments.

To conclude, poverty is the main cause of crime. Increasing job opportunities for young people and awarding stringent punishment to offenders will reduce criminal activities in the society.
