Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample
It is argued that countries which adopt longer working hours can achieve greater economic success. I disagree with this opinion as this measure can lead to physical and mental issues among workers and lower their efficiency/productivity.
An intensive work schedule is detrimental to our physical health and hinders the economic development of a country. Forty hours per week is prevalent throughout the world and universally accepted by the masses; however, some places require their citizens to work around 50 hours or longer every week. People feel tired and body sore because they lack adequate sleep. If the feeling of fatigue continues, they may suffer from some medical conditions common among modern employees, such as neck and back pains. Consequently, they may make mistakes when operating machines in the factory or slack off in the office by browsing the internet. In the long run, productivity and work efficiency will decline and this is definitely harmful to the economy.
Moreover, people who work long hours regularly may experience psychological disorders and this poses a threat to the economy and society. They are less likely to have a sense of happiness and get job satisfaction in the workplace since they are exploited by the work hours policy. Some people are diagnosed with depression and commit suicide, leaving their family members alone. For example, Foxconn, one of the largest electronics manufacturers in the world, is notorious for its extremely long working hours, and unusually high employee suicide rate. Obviously, long work hours create tragedies to families and society. In some cultures, strikes and protests against such companies and the government policy happen and the economy can be severely affected.
To conclude, a diligent workforce is the key to a country’s economic progress. However, the government must be aware that a too tight work timetable is almost never the best option; rather it is an obstacle to the economy and society.
