Band 9 IELTS essay sample
Some people believe that getting a university degree will improve their career prospects while others insist that work experience and interpersonal skills are more important than university education. In my opinion, experience is certainly important but it is not as important as a degree.
Experience and soft skills certainly matter. In many industries employers will only hire people who have previous work experience in the same sector. By hiring experienced employers, they can eliminate the costs involved in training new employees. Soft skills are also important now. Gone are the days when employees could finish tasks on their own. Now they require team effort. Also in this age of globalization businesses operate from multiple locations from across the globe. In this scenario an employee requires good interpersonal skills to communicate with a customer or a client living in another part of the globe.
However, experience and soft skills alone will not help much. Jobs have become more complicated these days and it is not possible to perform them without adequate knowledge and training. For example, a person cannot practice as a doctor or an advocate without getting a degree in medicine or law. Most jobs that offer good salaries actually belong to this category. Only a candidate who has spent five or six years at university can apply for them. Experience is something that an individual gains after getting hired. It will definitely improve their chances of getting a promotion or raise. However, in order to get hired, the first thing they need is a university degree. What’s more, nowadays, universities impart much more than theoretical knowledge. They conduct workshops to give students hands-on experience. University education also provides students an opportunity to interact with others and improve their communication skills.
In conclusion, experience is certainly important and in some sectors it is indispensable. However, in my opinion, experience alone will not help a person. In fact, in this age where most jobs require specialist knowledge, most employers would not even bother to hire someone who lacks a university degree.
Band 8 IELTS essay sample
Here is a band 8 essay sample on this topic.
Getting employed in today’s world is becoming increasingly challenging. While many people think completing education will help earn the best job others argue experience and softer skills are the key to a successful career. This essay will discuss why I believe being qualified is more important than being experienced to grow in the workplace.
There is no denying the fact that having more experience and developing soft skills help one in growing their career faster. This is so because you face practical aspects of work sooner in life than others who are still studying. Mark Zuckerberg, for example, started his venture earlier in life which led him to become a founder of Facebook at a very young age. He is now a youth icon. Young leaders like him have inspired thousands to focus more on experience and social skills than earning a degree certificate.
However, I strongly believe that completing graduation is the first step to becoming a qualified professional as/ because it requires students to acquire good subject knowledge along with exposure to practical side of the chosen field. The tech industry is an exception. If you are good at coding or is an exceptionally good mechanic, you will probably not need a degree. You can start something on your own and achieve success if you are really good at what you are doing. However, this is not the case with other fields. You have to have a degree in medicine or law to practice as a doctor or lawyer. You cannot say that you will acquire some experience and soft skills first. In the vast majority of fields, experience is something you can only acquire after finding a job and for finding that job, you need a degree first. Of course, to work as a carpenter, plumber, waiter or barber, you do not need fancy degrees. Generally speaking, experience matters more for manual jobs, but for the vast majority of white collar jobs, a degree is a must.
In conclusion, experience and social skills matter more in sectors that do not require academic expertise and hence people opting for manual jobs do not have to acquire a degree. However, for the vast majority of well-paying jobs in science, business, technology or academics, it is imperative to get a degree first.
Band 8 IELTS essay sample 2
Some argue that finishing university education is a definite way of obtaining a well paying job whereas others believe that experience and soft skills are way more crucial. In my opinion, a person having a university degree has a considerably higher chance of finding a job than someone who only possess soft skills and some experience.
On the one hand, experience is certainly important. For example, experienced doctors are certainly better but a person cannot gain experience as a doctor without gaining a degree from a medical school. Without a degree, there is a limit to the kind of experience a person can get. They can work as a waiter, bar tender, cobbler, carpenter or mason as those jobs do not require a degree. Actually, experience is more valued in such sectors. Likewise, good communication skills are more than enough for someone selling goods door to door. They do not need any fancy degrees. People who want to build a career in the show business as an actor, singer or model also do not need degrees. They just need some special talents.
On the other hand, a university degree is a must if you want to build a career in medicine, law, teaching or engineering. Without a degree from a law school, you cannot practice as an attorney. Likewise, without a degree in medicine, you cannot practice as a doctor. Generally speaking, most well-paying jobs need a degree. Careers in sports and show business are exceptions to this rule but as those jobs require inborn talents, they are not for everyone.
In conclusion, a university degree is a must for anyone who wants a well-paying job. Experience and soft skills are also important for everyone, but gaining relevant work experience as a respected professional such as a doctor, engineer or lawyer is not possible without acquiring a degree first. Hence, in my opinion, a university degree is the key to a successful career.
