Band 8 IELTS essay sample
Tourism has acquired diverse dimensions over the years. Today, a large number of people are heading to places where conditions are pretty hostile. There are both advantages and disadvantages to this trend and I will discuss both of them in this essay.
On the one hand, there are many advantages to visiting remote areas.Firstly, tourism strengthens the economic conditions of such places. With more tourists arriving in a country the economy of that country grows manifolds. Secondly, tourism industry is the main provider o) employment in such areas where people cannot find any other means to earn a livelihood. Thirdly, to support tourism many roads and hotels are built in remote areas. These facilities are also used by locals and hence, they too are benefited.
On the other hand, this kind of tourism has its disadvantages too. Firstly, local people find it difficult / challenging to share the already scarce natural resources with tourists. For instance, water is already scarce in the desert areas and with more tourists coming in the life becomes really hard for locals. Secondly, many places in the Antarctic and Himalayas are already under threat due to the influx of tourists.
To conclude, in my opinion, the positive aspects of visiting dangerous places like Sahara and Antarctica outweigh the negative aspects. What’s more, tourists can take certain measures to ensure that you are not causing much damage to these ecologically sensitive areas. For example, they can ensure that they do not litter around.

Nowadays, many people prefer to visit places with extreme climates / temperatures. There are both advantages and disadvantages to growing preference which I will discuss in the following paragraphs.
On the one hand, people prefer to visit difficult places because those journeys are more adventurous and a lot of people like adventure. Also, those experiences are new and exciting because they have not experienced anything like that before. In addition, visiting difficult places helps people test their limits and conquer their fears. Once they successfully complete the journey, they feel a sense of exhilaration that they cannot experience if they opted for a less challenging trip. Another advantage is that when people visit such places, they learn to live on very little because many of these off-beat travel destinations do not have even basic amenities. Learning to survive in such places will enable people to look at their life from a different perspective and be grateful for the things we take for granted in the modern world.
On the other side, there are lots of disadvantages if people visit such places. It may have adverse effects on the health of the people because sometimes they feel uncomfortable in such types of environments. In addition, we frequently hear about people who died during such trips because they were not able to live in such hard weather conditions. In some cases, people get lost in deserts or mountains.
To conclude, visiting places with difficult conditions helps people to push their limits and gain more confidence. However, such journeys can be dangerous if adequate safety measures are not taken.

Nowadays, many tourists are exploring destinations where conditions are extremely unfavourable. This essay will discuss the merits and demerits of this phenomenon for excursionists. There are many benefits for tourists to visiting these difficult terrains.
One of the main reasons for people to visit difficult places is the quest for thrill and adventure. Many people nowadays have a pretty predictable boring routine. They want to get out of it and one way is to take the less trodden path. For some people, visiting difficult places is an opportunity to conquer their inner fears. They want to do something quite difficult and if they succeed, it enhances their confidence levels. Besides this, people in cities / urban areas are living in a concrete jungle where they are surrounded by big buildings everywhere and it deprives them of an opportunity to enjoy the organic environment. To experience the natural beauty of Mother-Earth, they visit these difficult places that are still largely unexplored. There are also some people for whom visiting such places is an achievement they can boast of.
However, this phenomenon has some drawbacks as well. To begin with, the weather conditions in these places are often found unsuitable for tourists and sometimes put a far reaching impact on their health. For instance, in Sahara desert, many tourists suffer from heat stroke and dehydration because of blistering heat during the day time. In the worst case scenario, such trips can lead to the death or disability of the traveler. If you suffer a heat stroke in the middle of a desert, you may die especially since the chances of receiving timely medical attention are negligible. Another disadvantage is that if the tourist gets into trouble, launching a rescue operation can be very expensive. Yet another disadvantage is that tourists have a negative impact on the sensitive ecology of these places.
In conclusion, more and more tourists are visiting locations where conditions are difficult because they want to experience new challenges; however, the demerits like threat to life cannot be ignored.
