Should the same laws which prohibit the sale & consumption of heroin be applied to tobacco? Discuss.
Band 7.5 IELTS Essay Sample
Tobacco is a commercial commodity in many parts of the world, however alligning it in the category of severe drugs like heroin is a debatable subject. Personally, I somewhat disagree with the statement and in this essay, we shall examine why tobacco is a commercially viable product which has use beyond intoxication.
To begin with, it is imperative to understand that many countries around the globe have stringent laws against acquiring drugs like heroine and marijuana by any individual, which includes imprisonment and capital punishment. Tobacco, on the other hand, is extensively used in fields of medicine and research. Therefore, it is for this reason why tobacco is not categorised under the range of drugs which are illegal to possess. To add to this, a study conducted by a reputed university in London revealed, that consumption on tobacco in limited proportions occasionally, is actually beneficial for human health.
Another crucial fact to understand is the impact of heroin, which falls under the category of narcotics, is much more severe on human nervous system in contrast to the consumption of tobacco in form of cigarrette or powder. Narcotic drugs are far more addictive than tobacco, which causes mild effects on body. Therefore, the government’s prerogative should be to create awareness against exhaustive tobacco consumption to discourage its usage. Countries like India and phillipines have placed strict regulations on the sale of tobacco products, from limiting age restriction to more than 18 to printing large warning signs on packets at sale.
To sum it up, I would reiterate that the way sale and consumption of tobacco products is regulated under the law, is acceptable. It should be the wisdom of an individual to either consume or reject tobacco products.
