Band 7.5 IELTS essay sample
Some people think that values such as honor and kindness have become unimportant and the only important thing is the amount of money a person has. I strongly disagree with this statement and I will explain the reasons below.
There is no doubt that respect towards richer people has increased in the last few decades, so, the more income you have, the more respected you will be. However, this does not mean that a rich person is more valued. For example, someone who has a lot of money and does not share his wealth is going to be seen as a selfish person. People neither like nor respect them. By contrast, rich people who serve the society through their charitable acts receive a lot of adulation and admiration. Take, for instance, the case of Bill Gates. He is one of the most respected persons in the whole world but that is not because he is the richest man. Rather what made him so respectable is his philanthropic work.
There are also lots of celebrities like actors and sports persons who work for charitable institutions. They use their fame and influence to gather support for the causes they believe in. They also attract a lot of respect. For instance, in Spain, my country, there is an actor couple who quit their profession to volunteer for a charity helping poor children. These actors are well recognized because of their kind acts and not because of their money.
In conclusion, I firmly believe that money will certainly increase a person’s social standing; however, old values such as kindness and generosity are still very much cherished and in order to win the true love and admiration of their fellow citizens rich people have to show kindness and generosity.
Hi Manjusha! I hope you could help me correct my writing, thankyou!
Nowadays, based on how rich or how popular someone seems to determines society. This phenomenon has been coming gradually over the last decades. Most teenagers and adults agree that they would look up more and befriended someone rich, popular, or pretty rather than somebody plain but kind and honest. This makes some old-fashioned values a little worthless in the eyes of the public in general.
People claimed that they look up to someone because of their background that made them rich or popular. Surely their action must have originated from somewhere. Some people say that they are called rich or famous because of what they did in the past, such as donating large sums of money, take part in charity works, or even contributing some things that the public approve of. Let’s take the example of Greta Thunberg. She is an environmental activist known for challenging world leaders to take action against climate change. Because of her action, she became famous which originated from her kindness and awareness of climate change.
The example aforementioned makes us realize that the old values were not completely at loss upon humanity. But the purpose of one person could not do justice to the others. Others might not have so honorable intention. They might legalize all means to get fortune or fame. Along the process, they might use other people as a stepping stone and harm them. This event makes us realize not to judge the book by its cover. Plainly speaking, there are more people who had their eyes on fame and fortune rather than doing a mere act of honor and kindness. Therefore, I agree that a person’s worth nowadays is not based on old-fashioned values.

In this modern era, people judge the person based upon the social status and materialistic possessions one has. While others give importance to traditional values such as honour, kindness or trust. This essay will discuss both of the views.
Certainly, money plays an important role to categorise the status of people. Most rich people get extra consideration because of their possession of expensive items. Most of the time their display of abundance of possessions like big mansions, branded cars and boasting about holiday in foreign countries make others envy of them. Nevertheless, many of them get into lime light for some of their nefarious activities as well. For example, it is generally seen that adolescents always follow the footprint of celebrities without ascertaining the background of them. They merely judge them by their physical appearance and wealth which is due to the popularity these celebrities are obtaining on social media.
Undoubtedly, humanity is the back bone of any society. Survival for a long period of time will not be possible without trusting each other and showing kindness to others. A large group of people are still following basic old-fashioned values to form friendships and maintaining relationships. Trust and unconditional love are still considered as important aspects to deal with people, prospering harmony among them.
To conclude, there is no denying that we live in a materialistic world where society judge any one on the basis of their social status. Looking beyond the materialistic possessions, however, there are people who are the safeguards of humanity. Keeping our old beliefs and values alive among us.
