Band 8 IELTS essay sample
The urban population around the world is increasing at an astonishing rate and this trend has put a strain on social resources. Some people suggest that public parks in cities should be converted to business or residential areas to meet the growing need for land. I completely disagree with this point of view.
Green areas in cities play an important role in maintaining people’s health. To begin with, trees and other plants in public parks can absorb carbon dioxide and other chemicals in the air and this helps to provide better air quality for everyone living / everyone who lives in the city. This improvement can be crucial for those people who are suffering from breathing disorders because of the deteriorating air pollution. Another reason to maintain public parks is that they make a good place for people to exercise and stay fit. Regular exercise helps people build a stronger body, boost their immune system and thus protect them from catching illness.
Moreover, gardens and parks can make cities more visually appealing. If our cities were only filled with skyscrapers, residential areas and business districts, our lives would be dull and bored; whereas the trees and flowers can make our lives more colorful and bring people closer to the nature.
Finally, I would argue that building residential apartments and business centers is not a real option to address the issues brought by urban expansion. In my opinion, a better solution is that the governments should start to build more satellite centers outside already crowded downtown areas. This would not only provide more employment opportunities in suburban areas and boost economic growth but also relieve the air pollution and traffic problems in cities.
To conclude, I strongly believe that public parks in the cities should be reserved as it is beneficial to both citizens and civic landscape. To deal with the growing needs for land use, governments should take other measures such building more suburb centers.
Band 8.5 essay sample
Although many people value their public parks, this space could be better used for other purposes such as residential areas for the ever-growing population or to develop business and boost economies. To what extent do you agree or disagree?
It is irrefutable that a lot of people absolutely love their parks; however, some people opine that the area occupied by parks can be utilized in a more beneficial way by building residential and commercial structures there. I agree with this view and in my opinion, this is the best way to utilize the land occupied by public parks.
Firstly, building more residential spaces will give a chance to poor people to find affordable accommodation/homes. Property prices are pretty high in most cities around the world because of the scarcity of land. Converting parks into residential areas will free up more space where new buildings can be built. If more homes are built, prices will come down and homes will be more affordable to the poor people. Consequently, they will not have to live in the unhygienic shanties that are common in highly congested cities like Mumbai. If parks are used for building commercial establishments, it is good for the economy too.
Of course, this conversion is bad for the environment and air quality. However, considering the huge population that requires homes in cities, this is the price that we have to pay for making homes affordable and available to the masses. If poor people cannot find homes and are forced to live in slums, it is not good for them or the city as the slums could be breeding grounds for various infectious diseases and even crime.
To conclude, parks are certainly a necessity; unfortunately, for the vast majority of space starved cities in the developing world, they are a luxury. Since building homes is a more pressing need than improving air quality or offering relaxation, in my opinion, parks should be converted into residential or commercial areas.

Nowadays technology is increasingly being used to monitor what people are saying and doing (for example, through cellphone tracking and security cameras). In many cases, the people being monitored are unaware that this is happening.
Do you think the advantages of this development outweigh the disadvantages?
It is often said that that with the proliferation of technology people have very little privacy in their lives. Nowadays it is not very difficult to trace down a person with the help of advanced gadgets like GPS tracking devices, internet and security cameras. I believe this development has more advantages than disadvantages.
To begin with, It is said that technology has provided numerous solutions to our security forces and policemen to curb down the crimes from the society. Gone are the days when police used to spend days and nights to catch the criminals and later, they had to release them in absence of proofs. However, nowadays, with the help of advanced gadgets it is very easy for the security forces to vigilant the criminals without making them aware that they are being watched. This would help police to collect a lot of evidences. Further, in many cases these gadgets have proved their efficacy in preventing the crime before its occurrence which saved a lot of innocent lives.
However, many people believe that overuse of this technology is a threat to the privacy of an individual. People can misuse this technology for their self-use which is not good for the society. There are numerous crime activities like pornographic, spying, blackmailing etc which would increase because of this scenario.
After analysing above situation, it is not very had to come on the conclusion that spying technology is very effective for police and security forces to curb down the crime rate in the society. However, if this technology is being used for personal reason than it would stem severe repercussions in the society.
This seems band 6.5 to me.
Dear Manjusha
i just right a paragraph about parks and i appreciates your comments on it:
The importance of existence of parks is evidence, but it should be stressed that the primary responsibility of these green lands is to provide clean air. Planting an array of trees, not only refresh the air, but also clean the car-related pollution continuously. Moreover, when plays’ facilities in parks have brought significant convenience, parents’ obsession with safety and easiness of their children has been fulfilled. playing in safe area without interference of vehicles or cars bring comfort and easy mind, conserving youth from car accidents and related injuries.
There are many mistakes. Here is a roughly edited version.
The importance of parks is evident and it should be stressed that the primary responsibility of these green spaces is to provide clean air. Planting an array of trees not only refreshes the air, but also alleviates vehicular pollution. Moreover, when play facilities are installed in parks, it gives children a safe place to play in and parents can stop worrying about their safety . Playing in a safe area where there is no danger of cars protects children from accidents and related injuries.
Thank you so much…
